Edinson Cavani was not among the goalscorers as Manchester United edged past Liverpool to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup – but Bruno Fernandes has revealed how the veteran striker played a key role in his stunning free-kick which gave the side their 3-2 win.
Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock in what was a thrilling encounter between the two bitter rivals at Old Trafford but the Egyptian’s opener was quickly cancelled out by Mason Greenwood, who ended a run of ten games without a goal.
Marcus Rashford kept his cool to give the Red Devils the lead for the first time shortly after the half-time break before Salah completed his brace to set the stage for an enthralling finish, with a tie versus West Ham on the line.

Fernandes didn’t have his best game in United colours but the Portugal international once again stepped up to inspire his team to victory as he arrowed an unstoppable free-kick around the wall and beyond Alisson with 12 minutes remaining.
The midfielder will undoubtedly steal all the headlines for his heroics at the Theatre of Dreams and he showed he was a class act both on and off the pitch as he made sure to highlight Cavani’s part in his goal in his post-match interview with BBC Sport.

‘I’m happy, I’m happy because we win, nothing more,’ Fernandes said.
‘The most important thing was going to the next round and I think it doesn’t matter who scores.
‘Of course if I score I’m happy this is for sure.I work a lot on this kind of goals. Free-kicks, I try.
‘This one was good. Edi, before the free-kick, Cavani told me try the hard one to the side of the keeper, I tried and it went well.’

On United’s all-round performance, Fernandes added: ‘I think we played really well for 90 minutes it was a really good game for both teams.
‘We created a lot of chances, we pressed them more than the game in the league and this was the point to win this game.
‘As I say when I arrived in Manchester this is a dream come true to play for this big club in the Premier League to put them together is a dream come true.
‘I think everyone knows [how important it is to beat Liverpool], I know the fans are happy and will have a good week.’
