The Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era has finally been brought to a close at Manchester United.

It was a divorce that had been some time in the making, with United's form this season well below par despite heavy summer investment in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Three years on from having first taken charge at the club where he was revered as a legend for what he delivered during his playing days, the Norwegian, whose managerial CV prior to United had involved two spells as Molde manager in his home country and an ill-fated spell as Cardiff City boss, was sacked by the club.

Since Klopp took over from Rodgers in 2015 there have been 11 sackings made by their main rivals of United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

The target was a title tile but poor performances and heavy defeats, including the 5-0 drubbing by Liverpool at Old Trafford and Saturday's 4-1 humiliation at Watford had seen them fall well off the pace.

A Champions League and Premier League have been delivered despite spending less than the their rivals, particularly the likes of United, and while Liverpool have managed to engineer a way back to the top, United remain feeling around in the dark.
