It had been rumoured as far back as March that Liverpool were admirers of Marc Guehi.
The Crystal Palace captain is out of contract next summer and it appeared to be the perfect time for the Reds to strike a deal with the Eagles.
However, Palace were reluctant to let their skipper go and as time went on they were reluctant to look for centre-back additions in the event that Guehi did depart.
What ended up happening was a messy end to the transfer window in which Guehi had passed his medical, the clubs had agreed on a fee and the player was excited about joining before they pulled the plug on the deal amidst a furious reaction from Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.
It ha been reported that Glasner threatened to walk away from the job if Crystal Palace allowed Marc Guehi to leave the club, and as a result the transfer collapsed.
Now, Liverpool will feel like they have missed an opportunity, as they will now face competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs for the signature of Marc Guehi, whether that is in January or the summer.
Paul Joyce has now delivered an update on any potential future deal for Marc Guehi, deepening concerns over whether the transfer will ever happen.
Writing for The Times, Joyce states that: “Liverpool will not revisit their interest in Marc Guehi in January and would only now sign the Crystal Palace centre-back on a free transfer next summer.”
