Marc Guehi’s move to Liverpool is “expected to happen” but there is now a race against time to finalise the more intricate elements of the transfer.

The Crystal Palace defender has emerged as one of the Reds’ top transfer priorities in the latter stages of the summer window, alongside Newcastle’s wantaway star Alexander Isak.

Guehi is wanted by Liverpool with just a year remaining on his current deal at Selhurst Park, drastically reducing their asking price for the England international after turning down a £70million [BBC Sport] offer from Tottenham on 3 February this year.

Despite the threat of losing their captain for free this summer, Palace had been hesitant to let the 25-year-old leave and it has taken until deadline day for the deal to get the go-ahead.

Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Guehi, but no deal has yet been agreed for the ex-Chelsea defender.

Ben Jacobs revealed on X that the Reds are “confident of finalising a deal” for the England international, but time was running short to get the transfer done.

Should an agreement be reached for the defender, a medical would take place in London, rather than Liverpool.

The Eagles are also exploring the possibility of bringing Manuel Akanji in from Man City, with the Swiss defender linked with an Etihad exit.

Ibrahima Konate is a target for Real Madrid, and like Guehi, has just one year remaining on his contract.

The Frenchman was dreadful against Bournemouth on the opening day of the season, and whilst his performances have improved since then, there is an obvious need for alternative options at Anfield.

After a stronger showing against Arsenal on 31 August, Konate was taken off injured in the 79th minute.

However, his replacement Joe Gomez is now the subject of a bid from AC Milan and has already proven himself unreliable as a back-up due to his fitness issues.

Signing Guehi this summer will not only strengthen Arne Slot’s options this season, but it will also help Liverpool stave off the inevitable headache of searching for a Konate replacement next summer, should the Frenchman leave Anfield on a free transfer.
