Marc Guehi could leave Crystal Palace with up to £15million personally after the club blocked a late deadline day move to Liverpool.

Guehi was angry after his move to Liverpool collapsed in the final hours of transfer deadline day (1 September).

The late transfer drama saw the Eagles miss out on an opportunity to sell the Englishman for £35m which could now see Liverpool pay £25m for Guehi in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Crystal Palace players have been unsettled by the Guehi situation as the club now faces the possibility of the centre-back leaving on a free next summer.

Speaking on talkSPORT (3 September) over the poor handling of the Englishman’s failed move to the Reds, former Tottenham striker Alan Brazil criticised the Eagles’ approach which could see their captain walk out from Selhurst Park as a free man next summer.

The 25-year-old could net a hefty cash sum thanks to his exit at the end of his contract as the presenter said: “No, but he’s [Guehi] going to walk away.

He’s going to walk away with a minimum £10-15m in his pocket.

So this is bad business from Crystal Palace.

They’re keeping him to the end of the season but it is bad business.”

Football Insider verdict

Considering the England international’s cool head and professional attitude regarding the situation, I have no doubts he will continue to play for Palace.

Guehi will also know in the back of his mind that January will offer another opportunity for the Premier League champions to have another go at getting the deal over the line.

Steve Parish will be sweating over the prospect of receiving no money for his prized defender and will either push for the Englishman to sign a lucrative new contract or cash in in the winter window.

For the 25-year-old, provided he stays fit and keeps performing at a high level, his transfer will eventually arrive but patience will need to be demanded.

There is a small chance that if the Eagles block another approach from Liverpool in January that the former Chelsea academy graduate will simply run down his contract in order to leave on a free.

Arne Slot will be banging on the door of Richard Hughes to monitor the centre-back’s situation as the club could swindle a cheap deal next summer instead of paying a transfer fee.
