Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi appears to have stepped up a notch in recent days, with a plethora of reports claiming the Crystal Palace man is closing in on a move to Anfield.

The 24-year-old could come in as Jarrel Quansah’s long-term replacement, with the academy graduate expected to join Bayer Leverkusen.

Moving for Guehi, an England international, would be seen as a major upgrade at center-back, particularly given Quansah has been representing the Under-21 side this summer.

But there are conflicting reports on how far along negotiations are at this stage.

It’s unclear whether the Reds will be willing to pay in that region for a player who has 12 months remaining on his contract.

BBC sport adds “the first point of formal contact between clubs will likely be crucial” and if Liverpool don’t begin negotiations with a fee that is seen as “'low-balling” then negotiations could be smooth.

Meanwhile, Guehi would also need to be convinced of his place in the side, particularly with the World Cup approaching at the end of next season

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reports something similar, and claims the price would need to be “well south” of the $62M mark before Liverpool would consider an offer

Other targets are said to be on the club’s radar, chiefly Jorell Hato at Ajax, who is also admired by Chelsea and Arsenal.

Jacobs also claims via X that sporting director Richard Hughes would prefer a replacement for Quansah in the 18-22 age range, but a move for Guehi could prove “too strong not to proceed with”.

Palace is open to selling Guehi, but the player has not ruled out running down his contract at Selhurst Park.

But that contrasts with a recent report in the Mirror that states Liverpool is “closing in” on the transfer, while Nico Schira claims positive talks have been held between the Reds and Guehi’s agent.

Dave OCKOP, a reliable source of Liverpool news, adds that “positive discussions have intensified” in the last week, with a “growing confidence that a fee will be agreed” between the club.

The report states Arsenal and Newcastle United remain interested in the former Chelsea man, and personal terms are unlikely to be an issue between Guehi and Liverpool.

Whichever the case, expect further updates to emerge over the coming days.
