Marc Guehi is content to see out the final year of his contract at Crystal Palace, talkSPORT understands.

Liverpool have held exploratory talks with the Eagles over a summer swoop for the England international as extra competition for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

However, with Palace valuing Guehi at around £40million, and with the centre-back wanting minutes before the World Cup, a departure isn't guaranteed.

Plus, talkSPORT understands that a deal to bring in Parma's Giovanni Leoni is all but complete.

The Reds hope to wrap up the 18-year-old's signature in the next 24 hours in a deal that will cost £30million.

However, any transfer for Guehi isn't as advanced as it has been reported, with personal terms yet to be agreed.

Newcastle United tried desperately to sign the former Chelsea academy graduate last summer, but they didn't return this year, signing Malick Thiaw from AC Milan instead in a £35m deal.

Senior sources at Chelsea have also warned off any approach from them for their ex-player.

And should Guehi choose to run down his contract at Selhurst Park, several huge European sides will join the race.

Meanwhile, it's understood Liverpool are keen to do any deal via the club rather than approaching the player first due to their good relationship with Palace chairman Steve Parish.

Speaking after the Community Shield, Parish was asked if he may have to cash in on the England international as his contract expires next summer.

"We'd have to do that, of course," he responded.

"For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately.

"Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn't afford to lose both.

"We then had another bid [for Guehi] in January but that was a different situation.

"We'll just have to see what happens.

But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind."

The champions have already had a very busy summer

On the other side of things, there were also noises from Liverpool that they aren't finished after a blockbuster summer window.

Head coach Arne Slot said his team 'wouldn't hesitate' if they saw another opportunity to strengthen while speaking after the penalty shoot-out defeat.

"What people tend to forget is we lost four starters as well and that is not normal," he said.

It is not just down to them, the players that have stayed behind have also helped because they have such a good structure.

"We have lost Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez and losing that experience makes a difference.

"I can tell you that the players we have brought in have the quality to play for Liverpool.

"We have more than enough options [in defence], but if we see a chance in the market, we will not hesitate to act."

And with the addition of Leoni now close that takes Liverpool's spending up to the £300 million mark.

Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Giorgi Mamardashvili have all arrived at Anfield in a huge overhaul.

There's a chance there could be more offers after Leoni too, with Alexander Isak trying to force an Anfield move.

Newcastle rejected a £110m offer from Liverpool earlier in the window for their star striker.

The Swede missed much of pre-season and after being banished from training by Eddie Howe, he's now told the club he won't play for them again.
