Liverpool's interest in Marc Guehi could be complicated by the absence of a clear route into Arne Slot's team for the England defender.
The Reds are interested in signing the Crystal Palace captain as a replacement for Jarell Quansah, who looks set to join Bayer Leverkusen for around $45 million.
Quansah's impending exit will leave Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez as Liverpool's only three senior central defenders, and there are no guarantees over all three of those players' long-term futures at the club.
Gomez has also been linked with a move away, while Ibrahima Konate is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield.
Despite Konate potentially being able to leave for free next summer, and Van Dijk being set to enter his 35th year in July, there is every chance that the pair will start next season as Liverpool's first-choice center-back pairing.
In a World Cup season, that possibility could pose a risk to Guehi's chances of keeping his place in England's starting XI, should he not be able to break into Slot's preferred starting XI.
Guehi was one of the success stories of England's run to the Euro 2024 final, and will have his eye on a starting spot when next summer's tournament in North America gets under way.
Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham are all interested in Guehi, but The Guardian reports that the 24-year-old is also open to the idea of running down his contract at Palace and leaving on a free transfer next year.

If he does leave Palace this summer, Guehi has reportedly told friends that he would prefer to join Liverpool over Tottenham and Newcastle.
Liverpool has already secured the services of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, while Milos Kerkez is expected to undergo a medical next week.
And despite the spend for those players totaling close to $250 million including add-ons, the Reds seemingly have no intention of stopping any time soon
