Marc Guehi is unhappy with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner following a transfer deadline day saga that led to his move to Liverpool falling through at the last minute.

Crystal Palace had been wary of Marc Guehi potentially leaving the club for pastures new all summer, yet a move away never truly seemed likely until the final stages of the window.

Guehi only ever wanted to join Liverpool, as revealed to Football Insider by former scout Mick Brown in July, but the Anfield outfit seemed to focus on other incomings before making a concrete approach for his services late on.

Football Insider also revealed on Friday (22 August) that Liverpool remained hopeful of signing Guehi in a cut-price deal before the deadline, and negotiations continued behind the scenes on Monday (1 September) with the cut-off looming.

The move looked set to happen on deadline day, but Guehi’s Liverpool switch collapsed at the last-minute after the Eagles failed to bring in a centre-back replacement in time for everything to be completed, and the saga looks to have soured things between him and Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Glasner was insistent throughout the transfer window that Guehi had to stay at the club unless adequate replacements were signed, and he admitted after their win against Aston Villa on Sunday (31 August) that the club had “no chance” of signing two centre-backs in place of the England man and so had to keep him at Selhurst Park.

With the move having fallen through, Sky Sports (2 September) have revealed that there is now believed to be a “strained relationship” between Glasner and Guehi.

They also state that the 25-year-old is convinced that the Austrian boss had a “big part to play” in his failure to move to Anfield, and so the pair are clearly not seeing eye-to-eye right now.

Football Insider verdict

Guehi is known to be angry and disappointed at his failed Liverpool move, and blaming Glasner is probably a fair move considering he was so adamantly against his exit, but the boss should not shoulder the majority of the blame, as he was only doing what he felt was right by the club.

The England man should instead be annoyed at Palace’s transfer chiefs, and club owner Steve Parish in particular, after it emerged that he only sat down to discuss his move to the Reds at 6pm on Monday after he had attended a fitness class [Daily Mail].

His delaying of the negotiations led to a move only being nearly finalised after a deal sheet had been submitted to the Premier League to grant them an extension, and their failure to bring in a new centre-back was the eventual reason as to why the transfer collapsed.

Palace were targeting Brighton’s Igor Julio as a potential replacement, but Julio reportedly chose West Ham due to them offering him better terms, so that is another failure on Parish’s part.

It remains to be seen how the situation is handled from here on in, but luckily for Palace, Guehi is likely to continue to be respectful of the club and their fans, when he does really have the right to throw his toys out of the pram and kick up a fuss following their poor handling of the situation.
