Liverpool are moving at breakneck speed to complete their summer transfer business, with Richard Hughes overseeing an ambitious window aiming to give Arne Slot the tools to defend the title next season.
The Merseyside club have wasted no time in addressing their squad needs, with Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong completing his medical and signing a contract until 2030 after Liverpool triggered his €35 million release clause.
The 24-year-old right-back arrives from Bayer Leverkusen as a direct replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Meanwhile, German international Florian Wirtz has emerged as Liverpool’s priority signing, with the Reds initiating contact with the German club and even submitting a formal offer exceeding €100m according to Fabrizio Romano
The 22-year-old German international is valued at over £120 million by Leverkusen, which would surpass Liverpool’s current transfer record.
But now Spanish outlet Marca has linked Liverpool with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.
The Argentina international has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Atletico Madrid, netting 29 goals across all competitions in what has been the most prolific campaign of his career.
Julian Alvarez?
Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, confirmed in March that “Liverpool was interested in Julian last summer,” adding intrigue to the current speculation.
The player’s versatility, work rate, and proven ability at the highest level make him an attractive proposition for Slot, who is seeking to revamp Liverpool’s attacking options with Darwin Nunez potentially departing.
Arsenal have also emerged as serious contenders for Alvarez’s signature, with former Atletico sporting director Andrea Berta now at the London club and well aware of the striker’s capabilities.
Barcelona maintains a longer-term interest, viewing Alvarez as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski in the 2026-27 season, though they lack the financial muscle for an immediate move.
However, Marca adds that the World Cup Winner is not in a hurry to return back to the Premier League:
“In Atletico’s favour, it appears that the red-and-white number 19 is not passionate about returning to the Premier League.
“He knows the championship and the language, yes, but he feels more comfortable in Madrid and in a league in which he has ended up being one of the most outstanding players in the championship.”
With Frimpong secured, advanced talks for Wirtz and Kerkez progressing, and now new reported interest in Alvarez developing, the Reds are demonstrating a clear intent to build a squad capable of sustaining their Premier League success while competing for European honours.
