Marco Silva has confirmed that Fulham have opened contract talks with a former Liverpool player who remains vital to his plans.

It is common in football for a player to come close to leaving, only to become even more important right after.

Sometimes a transfer falls through at the last minute.

Other times a player proves his worth just when people least expect it.

That is the kind of situation unfolding at Fulham.

There is also fresh competition for attacking places after a new signing arrived late in the window.

Yet one long-serving winger has not let any of this shake his focus.

Instead, he has kept his place in every game and even scored in a big London derby.

His manager believes there is no reason to worry about distractions or commitment.

That winger is Harry Wilson, once on Liverpool’s books and now a key figure for Fulham.

Wilson’s journey helps explain his strong mentality.

He first represented Wales at just 16 in 2013 and went on to captain Liverpool’s U23s.

He made his senior Liverpool debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle in January 2017 and then gained valuable experience on loan.

Across spells with Hull City and Derby County he scored 23 Championship goals, followed by a Premier League year at AFC Bournemouth.

A second Reds appearance came in the 2020 League Cup against Arsenal before another loan, this time at Cardiff City, where he added seven more goals.

In the summer of 2021 he chose a permanent move to Fulham, where his consistent displays now underline why Silva wants him tied down for the long term.

Wilson currently has less than a year left on his deal at Craven Cottage and almost joined Leeds on Deadline Day, but Fulham decided not to sell.

Since then he has become a regular again and scored in the 3-1 win over Brentford.

Speaking after that match, manager Marco Silva explained why he is confident Wilson will stay.

“No, he’s not going to (be) distract(ed) at all,” Silva said.

“I know him very well, he’s not a player that is with me just one month, two months or two years?

It’s his fifth season with us.”

“It was my first signing in this football club when I joined and I know him very well.”

“For me, it was never a problem and I know really how much he wants to stay in the club.”

Silva confirmed that formal discussions are planned.

“Of course, conversations (will be had) between us and his representatives as well, and let’s see what is going to happen, but I know really the aim of him is to stay in the football club, and if we can get an agreement, his future is going to be with us.”

He underlined that the player’s mindset is clear.

“He’s 100 per cent sure, he’s part of the business, of course he’s looking for what is best for him like the club is trying to get the best for the football club, but I know what his aim is.”

With new loanee Samuel Chukwueze adding competition on the wing, Wilson’s steady role and desire to stay stand out.

For Liverpool supporters who remember his academy days, it is another chapter in a career defined by patience and belief.
