Marco van Basten has been discussing whether Feyenoord manager Arne Slot would be a good fit for Liverpool.

The Reds’ managerial search has hit a few speedbumps along the way as the end of the season rapidly approaches.

Xabi Alonso was thought to be the frontrunner, but he publicly ruled himself out of contention in March.

Then, Ruben Amorim rose in priority after it became clear that the Spaniard was staying at Leverkusen for next season.

With a 10-point advantage over Benfica in second place, Ruben Amorim and Sporting have one hand on the Liga Portugal title.

But it seems that Liverpool’s interest in the Portuguese manager has also waned – with Fabrizio Romano reporting as much.

Earlier today, reports from numerous outlets including Paul Joyce and David Ornstein confirmed that the Reds had made initial contact with Feyenoord over their manager.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool’s initial offer of €9m was turned down by the Dutch club.

Richard Hughes is reportedly playing a key role in the ongoing discussions at this phase.

On Feyenoord’s end, Technical Director Dennis te Kloese is leading the negotiations and is highly respected in the footballing community.

Nonetheless, relations between the two clubs remain positive, with Feyenoord appreciative that Liverpool waited to make their approach until after Feyenoord’s cup final victory last weekend.

Additionally, it is believed that Liverpool has been in touch with Arne Slot, who is eager to transition to Liverpool and the Premier League.

Marco van Basten delivers Arne Slot verdict

Footballing legend Marco van Basten, who can normally be quite critical of his compatriots, was full of praise for Arne Slot.

“I think he’s really good,” Van Basten began of Slot on Ziggo Sport’s ‘Rondo’ (via Metro).

“I’ve spoken to him a few times and I think what he does and what he sees is very strong.”

“He gets along very well with the group of players, is tactically well-versed, can explain things well and is calm and intelligent.”

“I think he can go to any club, even at the very difficult clubs, because he is so intelligent.”

“He has a lot of qualities and he shows it at every level.”

“He first did it at AZ, and now at Feyenoord.

And Feyenoord is a really complicated club.”

Van Basten has also delivered his verdict on whether Arne Slot could replicate his work at Feyenoord at big clubs like AC Milan or Liverpool:

“He has been doing well for three years, while PSV and Ajax have much more options in terms of money.”

“He could really fit anywhere?

If you get AZ and Feyenoord to play football, you also get big clubs like AC Milan to play football.”

“You can clearly see his hand where he is the coach.”

“I think it will even be easier for him at a higher level because he has better players who understand his ideas faster.”

“I also think he is smart enough to manage stubborn players.”
