Marcus Rashford’s loan move from Manchester United to Barcelona has taken yet another twist as the winger prepares for his league debut in Spain.
Last month (23 July), Rashford completed his season-long switch to the Spanish giants, who have the option to make the transfer permanent next summer.
However, the 27-year-old’s place in the Barcelona squad was immediately in doubt, due to the dire financial situation that the club are in.
Now, the La Liga champions have decided to unregister injured captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, which frees up enough wage space for the England international.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – is not surprised that the Catalan side managed to find a workaround that allows Rashford to be registered.
Barcelona have unregistered Ter Stegen
This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Barcelona have once again done magic tricks with their financing and accounting to get Rashford registered.

The forward isn’t yet confirmed to be in the Spanish side’s squad for the league season, but is just waiting on the last documentation to be approved.
Wyness added that it has been a real worry for Rashford, who has made a lot of sacrifices to force his move to Barcelona.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “At the time of the move, I mentioned that Barcelona would still have to register him.
“For Rashford, it’s been a real worry.
From all I understand, he and his agent have really taken sacrifices, and worked really hard at United to leverage this Barcelona move.”

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes will be going nowhere this summer with Ruben Amorim “determined” for the Manchester United captain to stay, sources have told Football Insider.
Fernandes was the subject of an £80million bid from Al-Hilal at the start of the summer transfer window, but the Man United captain rejected this move to stay put at Old Trafford in a huge boost for Amorim.
Football Insider revealed on 8 August that interest in Fernandes from the Middle East has resurfaced as the last month of the window begins, with both Al-Hilal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr keen on him.
However, sources have told Football Insider that Amorim is in no mood to let Fernandes leave as part of his squad rebuild at Old Trafford this summer, despite a near-complete transformation of United’s attack.
