Martin Skrtel to 'consider retirement' after contract terminated

Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel looks likely to consider retirement from football after agreeing to have his contract with Istanbul Basaksehir terminated, according to a report.

The 36-year-old, who joined the Reds for £6.5million from Zenit St Petersburg in January 2008 and made 320 appearances for the club before moving to Fenerbahce in July 2016, suffered a season-ending injury on December 27.

Playing in a 2-2 home draw against Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super Lig, Skrtel was forced out of the action on 52 minutes after rupturing his Achilles.

The Daily Mail says that the Slovakian - whose contract was set to expire in June - has agreed to depart the club early, and is now likely to consider retirement from the game.

After an initial three-year stint in Turkey, Skrtel signed for Atalanta in 2019 only for his contract to be terminated after just three weeks with the club’s president later claiming that he believed the player’s wife Barbora did not want to move to Bergamo.

Returning to Istanbul, Skrtel helped Basaksehir finish above the city’s traditional big three Galatasaray, Besiktas and his old club Fenerbahce to secure their first ever title last season which secured Champions League qualification – and a famous 2-1 home win over Manchester United – earlier this term.

For their part, Skrtel’s club have already drafted in his replacement, signing AC Milan’s 24-year-old Brazilian centre-back Leo Duarte on an 18-month loan deal.
