Spanish star Martin Zubimendi is on the cusp of a Premier League move, with Arsenal reportedly nearing a deal to bring him aboard.

That's following word the new Real Madrid boss, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti at his old club, is said to be keen on hijacking the deal from old pal Mikel Arteta.

Zubimendi, 25, demonstrated his worth by netting a goal in Sunday's UEFA Nations League final against Portugal.

Despite Spain's eventual loss on penalties, he proved his mettle by netting early on before playing the entire 120 minutes for Luis de la Fuente's team.

Having caught the eye of several top-tier English clubs over the past 18 months, it looks like Arsenal are set to edge out the competition with a verbal agreement over the move.

Even after Real Sociedad's poor start to this season while Liverpool thrived, Zubimendi insisted he had no regrets over rebuffing the Reds.

"My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times," he told reporters in October (via The Mirror).

At the time they showed interest in Zubimendi, the club had only recently said goodbye to Jurgen Klopp, ushering in an era of uncertainty.

The German had made Anfield a go-to destination for some of football's top talents once again.

But there was no guarantee former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot would be able to maintain or improve upon his predecessor's results.

Nonetheless, it could simply be that Zubimendi wasn't sufficiently tempted to leave his childhood club for life on Merseyside, or he was potentially waiting for an offer that captured his attention more, with Arsenal seemingly ticking that box.

Despite Liverpool setting their sights on Zubimendi, his decision to remain put didn't prevent Slot from securing a Premier League title in his first season in charge.

Liverpool were also tantalisingly close to lifting three trophies, enduring heart-wrenching defeats in both the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

In contrast, Arsenal ended up a distant second in the Premier League and only managed to reach the third round of the FA Cup.

It seemed as if Arteta's title drought might be broken in the Champions League, but both that and their Carabao Cup run were halted in the semi-finals.

However, this doesn't seem to have discouraged Zubimendi, with a move to north London now looking likely.
