Sunderland supporters have expressed their joy on social media after the club released a huge new update about Chris Rigg’s future on Wearside.

Sunderland sealed promotion to the Premier League last season in the play-off final, with Rigg playing a huge part in their success following numerous standout performances throughout the campaign.

At still only 18-years-old, he has been hotly-tipped to become a huge star in the future, with Football Insider revealing midway through last term that Sunderland were set to demand £30million for Rigg amid interest from Real Madrid, Man United and Chelsea.

Former club scout Mick Brown previously told Football Insider that Everton were leading the race for Rigg’s signature, but the Black Cats’ promotion to the Premier League has largely quashed rumours of his exit this summer.

Rigg has featured off the bench in one of their top-flight games so far this term, while he started against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (26 August), and the club have now released a huge new announcement to confirm his future plans.

Sunderland announced that Rigg had signed a new contract on Thursday (28 August) with a post to their official X account, saying: “Chris Rigg, Olé, Olé, Olé” with NEW and pen emojis alongside a graphic of the midfielder with a graphic that read: “Chris Rigg 2030.”

Being able to tie him down to a new deal will serve as a huge boost to the club and their ambitions in the Premier League over the next few years, and the fact he is now in-contract for another five years, rather than two, means they are likely to land a huge sum if he is sold on to a bigger team.
