Dominik Szoboszlai has arguably been Liverpool’s top performer during the opening weeks of the Premier League season.

There had been concerns ahead of the campaign that Szoboszlai would lose his place in Arne Slot’s team following the arrival of Florian Wirtz.

However, the Hungarian has so far started all four of Liverpool‘s matches, including August’s Community Shield against Crystal Palace.

And Szoboszlai has proven decisive in the Reds’ last two games, providing a match-winning dummy to tee up Rio Ngumoha’s late winner at Newcastle, before burying a sensational free-kick to hand Liverpool victory over Arsenal.

The 24-year-old took that form into the international break, where he is always a key man for Hungary.

And after playing at right-back during those triumphs against Newcastle and Arsenal, it seems Szoboszlai was deployed in another surprise role for his country.

Hungary had looked set to claim an important win over Ireland on Saturday after going 2-0 up within the first 15 minutes of the game.

Unfortunately for Szoboszlai – and Milos Kerkez who played the full 90 minutes – they threw the lead away late on to draw 2-2.

That was seemingly no fault of their captain, though, with Nemzeti Sport hailing the ‘masterpiece’ of a corner from Szoboszlai which set Roland Sallai up for a header to make it 2-0.

Interestingly, the Hungarian outlet also note that Liverpool’s No.

8 started the match ‘significantly further back than expected.’

Szoboszlai is claimed to have ‘organised play from deep’ as opposed to his usual role of playing more towards the opposition goal.

Assist aside, it does not sound as though the midfielder had his best game of all-time, scoring a six out of 10 and picking up a ‘careless’ yellow card during the first-half.

Liverpool supporters have had their eye on the Hungarian national team for a couple of years now, with Szoboszlai the real star of the show for the Magyars.

However, they now have double the reason to keep on top of their results, and Saturday represented the first time Kerkez featured for Hungary as a Liverpool player.

Like his clubmate, the 21-year-old also received a six out of 10 from Nemzeti Sport, who note that he ‘started actively’ with one ‘brilliant’ long ball picked out as a key moment.

Said to have been regularly ‘well positioned, focused and calm’, Kerkez appears to have built on an excellent showing against Arsenal last Sunday to deliver a mature display.

Hungary are next in action in a tough-looking match against Portugal on Tuesday.
