Max Woltman scored Liverpool's winner as Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s under-19 side were indebted to an outstanding display by goalkeeper Harvey Davies in withstanding a serious examination from the visitors.

But it was their defensive organisation and determination that was key to them opening their UEFA Youth League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over AC Milan in Kirkby on Wednesday afternoon.

Liverpool’s youngsters have forged a reputation for being among the most exciting at Academy level.

When Milan did find a way through, they found Harvey Davies in outstanding form, the Liverpool goalkeeper making a string of excellent saves, particularly during a closing 15 minutes in which the visitors dominated.

And his greater composure and positional sense was evident here in the face of a lively Milan forward line.

While hardly rough treatment, the close attentions of the Milan defence are something with which the Liverpool teenager has grown accustomed.

The only goal came in the eight minute when great persistence down the left from Owen Beck saw him hold off Milan right-back Andrei Coubis and pull the ball back for Woltman to finish beyond goalkeeper Sebastiano Desplanches.
