Sky Sports journalist Melissa Reddy has provided an update on why Liverpool did not proceed with Ruben Amorim.

At one point, it almost seemed a formality that the Sporting CP manager would succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield next season.

The 39-year-old seemed to possess all the quality needed to make the next step in his career at a club like Liverpool.

Since taking the helm at Sporting CP in March 2020, Rúben Amorim has swiftly risen as one of Europe’s most promising coaching talents.

Employing a dynamic 3-4-3 formation, he prioritizes a high-pressing, possession-oriented style of play, which aligns well with the strengths of many Liverpool players.

Under Amorim’s guidance, Sporting secured the Primeira Liga title in the 2020/21 season, their first in 19 years, disrupting the dominance of rivals Benfica and Porto.

Additionally, he led his team to victory in the Taca da Liga twice and reached the knockout stages of the Champions League, showcasing his aptitude in both domestic and European competitions.

However, things took a turn when the Portuguese manager was spotted on a private jet for talks in the UK.

His destination was revealed London for talks with West Ham United, who are examining their options with David Moyes’ future at the club unclear.

Some reports claimed that Amorim purposefully met with the Hammers to put pressure on the Anfield hierarchy, a decision that has surely backfired if claims are true.

Nevertheless, the Portuguese manager is now firmly out the frame with Arne Slot Merseyside-bound after Liverpool and Feyenoord reached an agreement over the weekend.

Now Melissa Reddy has provided her view on why the Anfield club decided against Ruben Amorim.

What did Melissa Reddy say about Ruben Amorim?

The Sky Sports journalist suggested that his playing philosophy and his long-term vision were two major detractors for the Liverpool chiefs:

“He had ticked quite a few of the criteria to get onto the shortlist but the big sticking point was that his playing philosophy was so different,” the South African journalist told Sky Sports.

“He likes to use three at the back – that doesn’t really stack up with Liverpool’s squad and their comforts in doing that.”

“Also his long-term vision didn’t align with the Liverpool way.”

“And, remember, Liverpool play the same way through all the age groups up, so you don’t want to disrupt that.”

Arne Slot will have plenty of work to do at Liverpool in the off-season, including helping to decide on contract renewals for players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Slot is believed to be ‘keen’ on the Egyptian and will also have the luxury of playing Champions League football next season, unless there is an unlikely 27-goal swing in goal difference.
