Liverpool’s Champions League group-stage opener against Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, September 17, is poised to offer another memorable European night under the floodlights.

The Reds arrive in buoyant mood after extending their perfect Premier League start with a 1-0 win over Burnley courtesy of Mohamed Salah’s 95th-minute penalty.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, make the trip to Merseyside anxious to shake off recent inconsistency.

The Spanish side recovered from a 4-0 opening-day league defeat to Real Sociedad by securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Valencia at the weekend but could be without five players including Julian Alvarez for the Anfield clash.

Amid this build-up, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong and gusty winds across Merseyside from Sunday evening until late Monday night.

Forecasts predict wind speeds of 40-50 mph in exposed areas, which could disrupt travel and cause power interruptions.

Coastal communities may experience spray and large waves, while road, rail, air and ferry services could face delays.

“Strong and gusty winds are likely to cause some disruption to travel and interruptions to power,” the Met Office notice states.

“It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.”

Supporters planning to travel to Anfield earlier in the week are advised to monitor local transport updates and allow extra time for journeys.

Crucially the warning expires well before matchday?

Forecast models show winds easing significantly by Tuesday morning, with clear conditions anticipated on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, Arne Slot has explained that Alexander Isak could be in line to make his Liverpool debut on Wednesday evening:

“Alex is far from ready for that schedule of three games in a week, 90 minutes,” Slot said post-Burnley.

“But then we could use him today for five minutes and then Wednesday again 10, and then 15, but we don’t believe that is the way to build him up.”

“But if he plays 45 on Wednesday don’t expect him to play 45 or more on Saturday because his body is not prepared for that, in our opinion.”
