When an operator with a reputation as high as Michael Edwards is available, links to other major clubs should come as no surprise.

A move to another European giant abroad would be something for Liverpool to be wary of given Edwards' connections — he could well seek similar transfer targets to Liverpool in that sort of new role, and the Reds would be competing for the Champions League with them too.

Like with the suggestion of Mohamed Salah wanting to remain in the Premier League, however — seeing Edwards move to a rival abroad might be just about palatable; seeing him elsewhere in England would be far more of a concern.

Adding Edwards to the Chelsea transfer team would certainly be a step towards them achieving what they want, but even then, there are a lot more moving parts at Anfield that get less of the credit than their former sporting director and transfer guru that also play massive roles.

Since it was decided by Edwards that he would be stepping down at Anfield at the end of last season for a new challenge elsewhere, PSG and Real Madrid have been linked with a move for him — while Manchester United and Chelsea are now said to be keen.

Instead, Manchester United remain a mess with little sign yet that the arrival of Erik ten Hag has changed that — understandably; it will take plenty of time — while Chelsea's new ownership see FSG's Liverpool as the model to follow, but it is not as easy as that to implement in reality.
