The post-Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool is slowly starting to take place ahead of the summer off-season.
In March, Liverpool announced that Michael Edwards would be returning to the club in a position of even more power compared to his previous post as Sporting Director.
He was named as FSG’s Head of Football Operations, a new ‘high-powered role’ where he will be in charge of all football operations including day-to-day running’s of the club as well as filling the various leadership position’s in Liverpool’s structure.
Michael Edwards has already led efforts to bring Richard Hughes to the club as the new sporting director, with Hughes set to join at the end of the current season after wrapping up at Bournemouth.
At Liverpool, Hughes will be tasked with overseeing the club’s recruitment strategy, player development initiatives, and overall sporting operations – and will work directly under Michael Edwards.
Hughes and Edwards will work in conjunction with each other relating to all football matters at LFC and will fill the power vacuum that Jurgen Klopp will leave behind at the end of the season.
Hughes also played a major role in identifying and subsequently bringing in current Cherries manager Andoni Iraola.
Iraola has done fantastic work at the Vitality Stadium, with Bournemouth well clear of the relegation zone in 13th place.
Perhaps Michael Edwards also saw the sporting director’s ability to pick out a manager, with Liverpool obviously needing one for next season.
Edwards is believed to be a fan of Hughes’ work and played a big part in bringing the ex-Scotland international to Anfield.
But it seems Edwards’ revolution at Liverpool is not stopping any time soon.
Liverpool to bring in former staff member David Woodfine
Journalist Neil Jones has reported that the Reds are set to bring back former director of loan management David Woodfine back to the club.
Woodfine worked with Michael Edwards at Portsmouth and then Liverpool, and it’s believed Edwards played a big part in his return.
Woodfine joined the Reds in October 2014 as Scouting and Recruitment Manager and went on to become Head of Football Projects and Scouting (from October 2017) and then Director of Loan Management (from December 2020) before leaving the club last summer.
However, this time, Woodfine is set to become assistant sporting director to Richard Hughes, further mapping out how the structure will look in the coming months.
Neil Jones writes on X:
“David Woodfine is to return to Liverpool as assistant sporting director to Richard Hughes.”
“Woodfine left his role as the club’s director of loan management last year, but has been been brought back as the Reds continue to revamp their football operations dept.”
