Thomas Frank’s side suffered a stunning defeat in the Super Cup to PSG as Tottenham threw away a two-goal lead to lose on penalties.

Supporters had been extremely concerned during pre-season, especially following Ange Postecoglou‘s sacking, but Frank’s playing style forced the Ligue 1 champions to look a shell of their former selves for much of the game.

Micky van de Ven opened the scoring from close range, jumping on Rodrigo Bentancur’s shot off the crossbar, before Cristian Romero headed home three minutes into the second half.

However, Kang-In Lee netted in the final five minutes to breathe hope into Luis Enrique and PSG’s side, with Goncalo Ramos rescuing a draw to send the final to penalties on Wednesday, 13 August.

PSG finally claimed victory via spot-kicks at the Bluenergy Stadium.

Guglielmo Vicario – 5

Very little for the Italian international to do against the Champions League title holders.

Could do nothing to stop PSG’s late comeback.

Pedro Porro – 7

Provided the assist for Romero’s header.

Little he could do against PSG’s comeback.

Micky van de Ven – 9 – Player of the Match

Absolutely sensational.

Rarely put a foot wrong on the night

Joao Palhinha (Off for Gray 72?) – 6

A decent performance in Spurs colours, his first outside of pre-season in white.

Caused issues all evening for PSG’s defence, and while his end product needs improving, his effort was contagious.

Richarlison (Off for Solanke 72?) – 7

Made a couple of chances for himself, having two efforts at goal that were well saved.

Ran himself into the ground and needed to be replaced.

Substitutes

Dominic Solanke (On for Richarlison 72?) – 5

Chucked his weight around but failed to offer much in the final third after coming on.

Archie Gray (On for Palhinha 72?) – 6

Helped sure up the backline, adding yet another defender to the pitch for Spurs.

Mathys Tel (On for Kudus 79?) – 6

Tried his best to defend, though arguably he did more bad than good when giving away a dangerous free-kick.

Lucas Bergball (On for Sarr 90?) – N/A
