Mikel Arteta has revealed his feelings on giving Liverpool a guard of honour this weekend
Liverpool and Arsenal meet at Anfield on Sunday in a fixture stripped of its seismic stakes, a stark contrast to the pre-season anticipation that framed this clash as a potential title decider.
The Gunners arrive on Merseyside still nursing the wounds of their 3-1 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinals.
The Gunners’ European dream unraveled in Paris on Wednesday, with goals from Fabián Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi sealing their fate despite Bukayo Saka’s late consolation.
This exit compounds a grim month for Arsenal, who have won just three of their last 10 league games and slipped 15 points behind Liverpool.
Once contenders, their focus now is securing a hollow second place – a third consecutive runners-up finish – while grappling with questions over Arteta’s ability to deliver silverware.
But the Spaniard remains humble enough to recognize that a guard of honour is the right thing to do.
Speaking in his pre-Liverpool press conference, Arteta confirmed his sides’ intention to give the Reds the customary respect:
“They deserve that.
If somebody’s better, you have to approve and accept and try to reach that level.”
