The Bournemouth defender has reportedly left the Hungary camp due to a ‘private’ matter, in what is widely being interpreted as a major hint towards the defender completing his move to the Reds.

Arne Slot hinted at a major spending spree towards the end of last season, and the Dutchman has orchestrated a significant reshuffle in recent weeks.

Liverpool have welcomed the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and remain locked in talks over a deal for his ex-teammate Florian Wirtz.

Liverpool are hopeful of heading into next season with a new set of fullbacks, and Kerkez was promptly shortlisted as a top target for the left-back role.

Despite interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid, the defender made it no secret that he would be keen to make the move to join the Reds.

Talks have been ongoing over a deal worth approximately £40million over the past few days, and an update from the Hungary camp hints that a move is on the horizon.

According to The Guardian, Kerkez has left his international team due to ‘private’ reasons.

The 21-year-old has therefore been ruled out of Hungary’s match at Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

Kerkez’s withdrawal comes at a time when Liverpool are somewhat in a race against the clock to get a deal over the line before the summer transfer window is put on pause due to the Club World Cup.

The window will be shut from June 11 to June 15, before reopening for the remainder of the summer.

Although Liverpool aren’t competing in the competition, they will be hoping to get a deal over the line sooner rather than later given that Kerkez was one of the breakout stars of last season and has suitors elsewhere.

Current Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson was asked about the expected arrival of Kerkez earlier this week and how he could be viewed as his successor, prompting the Scot to reply: “We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done.

“But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought.
