Left-back has been something of a problem area for Arne Slot’s side this season, and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez remains the only active link for that role, with reports of Liverpool’s interest first emerging back in January.
That strongly suggests Kerkez is the player Liverpool want, but they’ve yet to agree a fee with Bournemouth for the 21-year-old, so some patience will clearly be needed before this one gets over the line.
Who Liverpool may look to offload to make room for the Hungarian isn’t entirely clear, especially given Robertson has just one year remaining on his contract.
Given he’s almost always been first choice, it’s also unclear whether he would be willing to accept a back-up role if Kerkez does arrive.
Tsimikas, by contrast, joined in 2020 and has consistently played second fiddle to Robertson.
Robertson, meanwhile, holds greater seniority within the squad, and it can be argued his off-field presence is just as valuable as his on-field contribution.
The arrival of Kerkez could even reignite a spark in Robertson, pushing him to meet the high standards he once set next season
This would be the first time since his first year at the club that he’s faced genuine competition for his place, and he’ll know he must perform at the highest level to remain first choice in the biggest games.
If Robertson does stay, Liverpool will need to seriously consider offering him a new contract
Otherwise, they risk returning to the market for a second-choice left-back in 12 months’ time, unless they bring in a versatile left-sided defender this summer.
There’s a case to be made for keeping either Robertson or Tsimikas as competition for Kerkez next season, as both have their strengths and weaknesses
