Competitiveness between teammates is often crucial to success on the pitch.
Holding each other to high standards can result in achievements being reached faster if it is handled in the correct way.
Mohamed Salah has always shone as an individual since his arrival in Liverpool, registering the highest goal contributions in every season he has been at the club, but he was part of an infamous trio that arguably brought out the best football in him.
From 2017 until Sadio Mane’s departure in the summer of 2022, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino formed one of the deadliest attacking trios football has ever seen.
The attacking trident, coached to perfection by Jurgen Klopp, won everything possible in English football and scored a combined 338 goals between the three of them between 2017/18 and 2022/23.
Due to the extraordinary success these three enjoyed on the pitch for so many years, the automatic assumption would be that that was a result of their understanding and close bond on and off the pitch, but Mohamed Salah has revealed that this was not the case.
The Egyptian winger has once again addressed his relationship with the Senegalese forward, revealing that his relationship was Sadio Mane was not an easy one.
In an interview with France Football, when asked about his relationship with Sadio Mane, Salah said:
“I scored a lot [in my first season], and then Sadio told himself it was his turn to score more too.”
“Yes, there was tension with Sadio.
Off the pitch, we weren’t very close, but we always respected each other.”
Salah went on to be questioned about previous comments that labelled him selfish.
“I don’t care.
But I invite everyone to note that the person who provided Mane with the most assists is me!”
“People can look at the facts, but clearly, it’s easier to throw out statements like that, they make big headlines.”
Two competitors who pushed each other on despite their differences, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah gifted Liverpool some of the most historic and memorable moments of the 21st century.
