Mohamed Salah is never far away from a record but the one he has just helped Liverpool break is very different from the usual ones.

The Reds were tasked with rounding off the gameweek two fixtures with a trip to St James’ Park on bank holiday Monday, in a game that certainly lived up to expectations.

The Alexander Isak saga ramped up the pressure ahead of this clash, with it being perhaps even more fiery than many had imagined.

Liverpool came out on top, though, but they needed 16-year-old Rio Nguomha to save the day for them, with the Englishman netting a last-gasp winner.

This goal meant a lot for many different reasons and broke a whole load of records, but there is one record that Salah played a key role in.

Salah certainly had one of his quieter games in a Liverpool shirt but as he always does, he managed to pop up with an important moment right at the death.

The Egyptian has broken plenty of records himself, but this time he has contributed to more of a team record, with this one not being broken for 24 years.

Salah (34) assisting Ngumoha (16) was the biggest ever age gap between a scorer and assister for a Liverpool goal in the Premier League according to data editor Michael Reid.

There was 15 years and 157 days between the two of them when they did it towards the start of the 21st century, meaning it has been broken by 283 days,

It will certainly be remembered for its importance, but the fact it has broken so many records means that it will never be forgotten.

In terms of overall performance, despite having 10 men, Newcastle probably deserved to win the game, or at least get something out of it.

But Ngumoha broke their hearts right at the very end, something the Magpies have been accustomed to over the years.

His goal in the 110th minute was the fifth time the Reds have beaten Newcastle with a 90th minute+ winner, with the last coming from Darwin Nunez in 2023.

Others include Stan Collymore in 1996, Robbie Fowler in 1997 and Fabio Carvalho at Anfield back in 2023.

This is now a joint Premier League record, something Liverpool already hold after scoring five late goals against Everton through the competition’s history.
