The Saudi Pro League’s interest in Salah is nothing new as most Liverpool fans are aware.
Last summer, Al-Ittihad made an astronomical £150 million bid that Liverpool rejected, with Liverpool president Mike Gordon personally turning down the offer according to reports at the time.
The bid was described as “astronomical” by Saudi sports minister Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Saud.
Despite Al Ittihad’s aggressive push – including reported salary offers of £2.45 million per week and lucrative ambassadorial roles – Liverpool immediately rejected the approach.
As Salah entered the 2024/25 season with just 12 months remaining on his Liverpool contract, speculation about a free transfer to Saudi Arabia intensified.
Liverpool faced mounting pressure as Saudi officials publicly courted the forward.
Al Ahli president Khaled Al-Eissa declared Salah their “top target”, while Saudi Pro League director Michael Emenalo confirmed ongoing dialogue, stating, “The stories that our teams went after him were true… but Liverpool didn’t want to sell.”
Now Mohamed Salah has given his side of the story after almost two years of Saudi courtship.
Salah, speaking to Egyptian television channel ON Sports, first suggested that he would be able to play until 40 if he really wanted to:
“I will stop playing when I have that feeling but if you ask me for my opinion, I think I can play until the age of 39 or 40.”
“But if I felt before that I wanted to stop, I would quit.
I have achieved a lot of things.”
Then speaking on the Saudi links directly, the 33-year-old confessed that he would have made the move had his contract not been sorted.
Furthermore, he admitted that communications channels with Saudi representatives remain open and positive:
“I thought it was a good opportunity.
My contract was up at Liverpool and I would have gone to Saudi but we finalised the deal with Liverpool
“And I still have a good relationship with them and I always stay in contact with them.
Yes, we were talking to each other,” Salah explained.
“I don’t know what is going to happen but I am happy here in Liverpool and I am staying here for the next two years?
Then I will see what I will do next.”
By the time that contract expires, the Egyptian forward will be 35 years old.
But with how the forward maintains his body, he could sign yet another extension at Anfield.
