Mohamed Salah has demanded respect for two of Liverpool’s former players after claims that they’d made the biggest upgrade “in footballing history”.
Liverpool‘s massive summer of transfer business came to an end on deadline day as the Reds broke their transfer record for the second time in just 73 days, confirming the £125million signing of Alexander Isak.
Isak‘s arrival at Anfield for a British record fee took Liverpool’s spending beyond the £400m mark and saw the former Newcastle United striker become the tenth new addition in a summer of huge changes.
Over half of Liverpool’s £400m-plus outlay has gone on two players in Isak and previous record holder Florian Wirtz, and the duo have already taken the lauded squad numbers from two of last season’s title winners.

Wirtz swapped Bayer Leverkusen‘s number 10 shirt for the iconic seven of Liverpool when they assigned their squad numbers for the season, after it was left vacant following Luis Diaz’s move to Bayern Munich.
Likewise, Darwin Nunez‘s exit to Al-Hilal left the number nine up for grabs, and Isak was spotted wearing that very jersey at Liverpool’s training centre in the hours before his £125million move was confirmed.
Liverpool fanpage Anfield Edition posted a graphic on X featuring Diaz and Nunez alongside Wirtz and Isak in their respective jerseys on 2 September, and said: “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history.”

Salah reposted to hit back at this perceived criticism of Diaz and Nunez, and captioned his post with the message of: “How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the [Premier League] champions?”
Football Insider Verdict
The Reds return to Premier League action with a trip to Burnley on 14 September, but it remains to be seen if Isak makes his debut in this match given his lack of training time with his new team-mates.
Isak went on strike at Newcastle in a bid to force his move to Anfield, effectively sacrificing a full pre-season of preparation for Premier League-level football before finally making his deadline-day move.
Wirtz is under pressure to return from international duty in top form after a mixed start to his own career at Anfield, and the onus is also on Arne Slot to get the best out of an expensively-assembled machine with so many brand-new parts.
