Darwin Nunez has brought his Liverpool career to an end, joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal on a three-year contract.

The Saudi champions secured the 26-year-old for a fee of €53m (£46.3m), with Nunez linking up with their squad during their pre-season training camp in Germany.

Signed from Benfica in June 2022 for an initial £64m, Nunez arrived at Anfield amid huge expectations.

He went on to score 40 goals in 143 appearances for the Reds, but only started eight Premier League matches during their title-winning campaign last season.

In a statement, Liverpool said: “Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Núñez’s departure could influence Liverpool’s pursuit of Sweden international Alexander Isak, after Newcastle United rejected an opening bid of £110m.

While Nunez never consistently reached the heights anticipated following his record move from Benfica, he produced moments of drama that will be fondly remembered at Anfield.

These moments included his late double to seal victory over 10-man Newcastle in August 2023, a 99th-minute winner against Nottingham Forest in March 2024,  as well as two stoppage-time goals against Brentford in January that helped secure vital points.

However, his inconsistency in delivering such moments ultimately convinced new head coach Arne Slot to explore other attacking options.

Writing on X, Mohamed Salah sent a heartfelt message to Darwin Nunez, saying: “I consider myself lucky to have had you as a teammate and friend.

“You were always very real and brought so much good energy wherever you went.

“You made us laugh and showed heart in everything you did?

You will be missed and I wish you the best in your new club.
