Florian Wirtz is set to become Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever.

And if all add-ons are triggered, he’ll be the most expensive player in British football history.

That’s a title Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo currently holds.

When Chelsea signed Caicedo for £115 million in 2023, Liverpool had also tried to get him.

The Reds even had a bid accepted by Brighton.

But Caicedo chose Chelsea.

Since then, Liverpool fans have watched him closely.

Some were disappointed when he turned the club down.

But others were happy to see Ryan Gravenberch step up instead.

Now with Wirtz arriving for a potential £116 million, comparisons with Caicedo are only natural.

Both are big-money midfielders.

Both came with huge expectations.

But they play different roles.

Wirtz is a creative attacker.

He scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists for Bayer Leverkusen last season.

He’s not a direct Caicedo replacement—but the price tag makes the connection impossible to ignore.

Caicedo was asked about Wirtz while away at the Club World Cup with Chelsea.

Liverpool fans may have expected something serious.

Maybe even some shade.

But his response was relaxed.

“I didn’t know Liverpool were going to pay that,” he said, via Sky Sports News.

“It’s good,” he added with a small smile.

“It’s good.”

There didn’t seem to be any bitterness.

In fact, he had nothing but praise for Wirtz, “Yeah, he’s a great player.

He’s a very good player.”

“So I’m happy to hear he’s [coming] to the Premier League.”

For Liverpool fans, Caicedo’s comments might come as a surprise.

There’s no tension.

Just respect.

And maybe a little relief, too—especially now that Gravenberch has shone and the club are about to bring in a Bundesliga star.

It’s early days, but Wirtz’s arrival already has the football world talking.

Even the man he’s about to overtake.
