England legend Stuart Pearce believes modern day Premier League players are always drawn to clubs in major cities like Manchester, London and Liverpool.

Pearce, who has also managed Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, looked back on his experience as a manager and said that players and their families look for opportunities to live in the UK's major cities.

Despite the arrival of Hugo Ekitike pushing Liverpool's transfer spending to the £300million mark, reports from Sky Sports Switzerland claimed the Reds have agreed a five-year contract with the Swedish forward.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League and even defeated Arne Slot's side 2-1 at Wembley Stadium in the League Cup final.

However, Pearce believes the prospect of living in a major UK city like Liverpool could be too much for a player like Isak.

"I found out through my experience as a manager in the Premier League that players want to play in the Champions League," Pearce told the Manchester Evening News.

'Are you in the Champions League?' A lot of players want to be near the big cities.

They want to be near Manchester, they want to be in London and their families want to be there.

"You're fighting, geographically, if you are up in Newcastle and that's just the nature of a footballer's mentality, I'm afraid.

Newcastle have been linked with a move for highly rated RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, but with with Manchester United also interested in the Slovenian, Pearce's comments suggest they will also have a hard time swaying him to St James' Park.

The Magpies have also been linked with moves for Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and, most recently, James Trafford, but they picked Chelsea, United and Manchester City, respectively.
