Liverpool have had their fair share of elite players throughout their history and many would have inspired those within the game today.

When you think of some of the greatest teams in the 21st century, the Reds may perhaps not spring to mind initially, but some of the players they have had within this time were nothing short of sensational.

In fact, some of Liverpool’s players were so good that they even caught the eye of players from other teams, with Chelsea’s Levi Colwill one of these.

The centre-back might play for a rival club but there is one player in particular who had a huge influence on his game, even going as far as idolising him.

If you ask most Liverpool fans who one of their favourite ever players is, a large majority will mention Steven Gerrard, and it is fully justified after what he did for the club.

He rejected moves away on numerous occasions to the likes of Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea, with the latter the side he was the closest to joining.

Despite upsetting many Blues fans with his decision, Colwill still grew up to love him and most recently named him in his all-time favourite XI.

When asked by the Official Chelsea account for his favourite 11 players, he named 10 Chelsea stars, with Gerrard the only non-blue of the lot, although his reasoning made a lot of sense.

“He was my idol growing up,” Colwill revealed as to why he picked the Liverpool legend.

“My family were Liverpool fans, so everything in my house growing up was Gerrard.

I even had a dog named after him!

Not only does Colwill clearly have some sort of affiliation to the Reds, but he would also be the perfect player for them as they look for a new centre-back.

He was linked with a move to Anfield in the past but the Blues felt he was untouchable at the time, and he would be even harder to get now.

Chelsea see Colwill as a future club captain and value him at £100m, a figure that Liverpool will not even attempt to negotiate at.

Marc Guehi, who also had a spell at the Blues, is now the Reds’ top target and a move is developing quickly, with the Englishman being considerably cheaper than Colwill would be.
