Liverpool could send the world of football into meltdown if they follow up with a British transfer record bid for Alexander Isak.
The Reds are right in the mix to sign Isak after the Sweden international told Newcastle he wants to leave this summer.
Eddie Howe delivered an update on Isak’s situation on Saturday morning, confirming that contract talks between Newcastle and their star striker are currently on hold.
Isak‘s head appears to have been turned by Liverpool, and the Reds are seemingly ready to pay a record fee to sign him.
Generally, the potential of Liverpool signing the Premier League’s second top scorer of last season has been met with boundless excitement around Anfield.
However, former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has sounded a word of caution over the mooted addition, outlining one major ‘concern’ he has over Isak’s arrival.

Initially, it had looked as though Liverpool had been deterred by Newcastle’s stance over Isak and had pivoted to sign Hugo Ekitike.
However, it has since become clear that the Reds are interested in pairing the two strikers together.

Speaking on ESPN FC, however, Nicol says he simply does not see how this can work in practice.
“How does this figure into the front line?” he queries.
“Salah has to play wide right, are you going to play Ekitike and Isak?
I guess you could do that.”

“That would be my only concern I think, to have the problem is going to be a great one, but at the same time, be careful what you wish for because if you’re going to upset the applecart, you’re going to make people unhappy.
“Sometimes you’re better staying away.
So, I’m kind of 50/50 on this.”
As well as querying how Isak and Ekitike could play together, Nicol also took issue with the timing of the Newcastle player’s transfer request.
“I find that a little strange,” he said.
They would be talking to him, whether it’s behind closed doors, someone making a phone call.”
“That’s what I find strange, it’s taken until Ekitike actually signs for Liverpool, for Isak to turn around and demand to be going.
Liverpool knew that Newcastle wanted to sign Ekitike, for example, so by moving early to take him off the table, they made sure they secured one target, before Isak did his bit to try and hand them another.
There is some fascination over how Liverpool could pair these two together, but Newcastle were trying to do it as well, and Arne Slot clearly has a plan.
