Man United have accelerated their move to sign Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Sam Lammens in recent days, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that they are now closing in on an agreement with the 23-year-old.

Lammens was left out of Antwerp’s match against Mechelen on 24 August and is now expected to complete a move to the Premier League before long.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 4 August that Man United are pushing to sign a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closes.

Having previously explored the possibility of deals for Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma from Aston Villa and PSG respectively, Lammens has now emerged as the top target.

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim is believed to be “raging” at the performances of his current goalkeeping options after Altay Bayindir endured difficult games against Arsenal and Fulham.

Brown told Football Insider in June that Man United planned to sell Andre Onana to clear space for his replacement – but they have been unable to do so.

Despite that, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also worked for the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham, insisted that they remain keen to bring in a new option between the sticks.

“They played well against Arsenal, but the goalkeeper cost them the game,” he told Football Insider.

“He very nearly cost them the game at Fulham as well.

“Ruben Amorim is raging because he can’t rely on his current options in goal.

“It’s alright saying it’ll be fine when Onana comes back in, but he hasn’t exactly proved to be reliable, and he’ll be going to AFCON this season.

“So they’ll be back in the exact same position struggling with their options.

“From what my sources tell me, they’re closing in on signing the goalkeeper from Antwerp, Lammens.

“I’ve never seen him play, but United have been looking at him and going through his stats and all of that sort of thing, and they think he’s the right option.

“It’s been a clear priority for them, and now they have to hope he can do a better job.”

While speculation continues to surround potential incoming deals at Old Trafford, there is also a focus on sales, with Kobbie Mainoo now linked with an exit.

Brown told Football Insider on 25 August that Mainoo could be tempted to quit Man United with his lack of recent playing time becoming a “major concern”.

The England international has not played a single minute across United’s two Premier League games so far, with Amorim claiming he is in competition with Bruno Fernandes.

As a result, he may have second thoughts, as he wants to play regular football to give himself a chance of making Thomas Tuchel‘s World Cup squad in 2026.
