Naby Keita was less than halfway through just his second start of the calendar year and Jurgen Klopp had seen enough.

"It was tactical," Jurgen Klopp confirmed after the game.

As the No.8 went up on the substitutes' board, two theories were quickly formed about Keita's early departure against Real Madrid.

But it was not another injury setback that cut short Keita's evening in the 3-1 defeat to los Blancos.

Klopp indicated, pre-match, that Keita's performances in training could no longer be ignored when asked about the surprise decision to start a player who has made just 16 appearances all season.

That, in hindsight, was a viewpoint Klopp appeared to agree with at the Di Stefano Stadium, post-match.

"He didn't play for a while, especially not from the start, we were not good in the game, Naby was not good in the game, but if we all saw the game and I am honest, I could have made a few more changes to be honest.
