Darwin Nunez looks set to depart Liverpool this summer.
He has failed to impress at Liverpool, and after coming off the back of yet another season where he frustrated in front of goal, it seems almost certain that he will seek a new adventure in the coming months.
Arne Slot limited the Uruguayan to a handful of appearances last season, clearly favouring others over him in his starting eleven, opening the exit door for Darwin Nunez to leave as he is not in the Dutchman’s plans.
Before the transfer window opened there were rumblings that Darwin Nunez was attracting interest in his services from Saudi Arabia, but such rumours have since quietened after Napoli became front-runners for his signature.
The 26-year-old striker had reportedly given the green light to Napoli, as a move began to accelerate.
However, Sky Sports Italy has now delivered a damaging update on any news that had previously linked Darwin Nunez to the Serie A champions.
According to the report, Napoli have decided to abandon the Darwin Nunez operation due to the excessively high costs involved.
The Italian club was struggling to meet Liverpool’s valuation of the player, and as a result, the deal has collapsed.
Napoli are now instead focusing their efforts on signing Udinese striker Lorenzo Lucca and they are reportedly close to getting that deal over the line.
The deal will cost up to 34 million euros for Lucca, a considerably lower sum than what it would’ve been for Darwin Nunez.
Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this week that Liverpool had rejected a 50 million euros bid for Darwin Nunez, with Napoli expected to return in the coming days.
It has now been confirmed that Napoli decided against bidding higher for the Uruguayan, as they seek alternatives such as Lucca.
With Napoli now out of the race to sign Darwin Nunez, other clubs remain interested, as it seems unlikely that his future will be at Liverpool.
