Napoli are making Darwin Nunez their primary transfer target this summer, with the Serie A champions pushing hard to bring the Liverpool striker to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium ahead of their return to Champions League football.

The 26-year-old has emerged as Antonio Conte’s top priority as the Italian giants look to strengthen their attacking options following a successful title-winning campaign.

Nunez has reportedly given his “initial green light” to the move after being presented with Conte’s ambitious project for the upcoming season.

While the Uruguayan appears keen on the switch to Italy financial obstacles remain between the two clubs.

Liverpool will be seeking to recoup a substantial portion of the £64 million (potentially rising to £85 million) they paid Benfica for the striker in 2022.

Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph has now reported that the Naples side are now preparing an official offer the Uruguayan.

The appeal of working under Antonio Conte appears to be a significant factor in Nunez’s willingness to consider the move.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager has identified the striker’s physicality and height as key attributes particularly as Napoli prepare for the increased demands of Champions League football.

Giovanni Manna, Napoli’s sporting director, is said to be leading negotiations and is understood to be working tirelessly behind the scenes to bridge the valuation gap between the two clubs.

Reports from Italy claim that the offer will be €45m plus €5m in add-ons.

However, it is thought that Liverpool wants closer to €65m plus incentives to sanction a sale.

Darwin Nunez registered only seven goals and seven assists in 47 appearances across all competitions during the 2024-25 season.

He found it difficult to regain the confidence of manager Arne Slot, particularly in the second half of the campaign.

With his contract valid until 2028, Liverpool remains in a strong bargaining position, even as his playing time has diminished.

Nevertheless, the club may have to be prepared to cut their losses and accept a lower fee rather than keep a player whose value is likely to decline over time
