Liverpool supporters have had plenty to goad Mark Clattenburg with in recent weeks after the former Premier League official directed some controversial comments towards Jurgen Klopp.

The 45-year-old was at it again after he explained why the half-time whistle was blown while Sadio Mane was seemingly through on goal during the 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool appeared to have fashioned a dangerous opening when Xherdan Shaqiri lofted a through-ball to the Senagalese ace with only 55 seconds of the additional minute having been played.

However, match-official Paul Tierney abruptly brought an end to the first period – prompting an outpour of frustration from Liverpool supporters on social media.

The decision had a number of Liverpool’s first team in utter bemusement, particularly club-captain Jordan Henderson.

Clattenburg on Liverpool

Following the controversial call from Tierney, Clattenburg has had his say on the highly-debated decision.

“There was only one moment of slight controversy and it came right on half-time,” Clattenburg wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“One minute of added-time was shown and the TV clock indicated 55 seconds had been played when Tierney blew his whistle with the ball in the middle of the pitch.

“He wanted play to finish in a neutral area, as is standard for referees. The problem was, in a split-second, Liverpool played a ball over the top and Sadio Mane was looking to get away on goal.

“Technically, Tierney should have waited until the minimum of one minute had been played.

“He was helped by the fact Mane and United defender Victor Lindelof then stopped playing, so we do not know what would have happened next.”

“But I would not criticise Tierney for this incident. He had a very good game, it’s just a shame we didn’t have that real intensity.”

Naturally, Clattenburg’s comments were seen as untimely by Liverpool supporters as yet another refereeing decision left fans with a sense of injustice.

Indeed, the Reds could have offered more from an attacking sense, but in a game with limited opportunities, Liverpool were right to feel a sense of bemusement.

Klopp and his team have scored just once in four PL matches, after all. During a period where opportunities are far and few, Liverpool really could have benefited from such an opening.

Nonetheless, some Reds supporters aren’t happy to see Clattenburg publicly in the spotlight again in the midst of another Liverpool setback.

Here’s how some of the Anfield faithful reacted to Clattenburg’s comments in the aftermath of the 0-0 stalemate…
