Former Benfica man Nemanja Matic has been quizzed on Ruben Amorim’s possible move to Anfield to become the new Liverpool manager.

It is believed that the Sporting CP manager is the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp next season, but he recently disputed reports that he met with representatives of the Anfield club.

Since taking the helm at Sporting CP in March 2020, Rúben Amorim has swiftly risen as one of Europe’s most promising coaching talents.

Employing a dynamic 3-4-3 formation, he prioritizes a high-pressing, possession-oriented style of play, which aligns well with the strengths of many Liverpool players.

Under Amorim’s guidance, Sporting secured the Primeira Liga title in the 2020/21 season, their first in 19 years, disrupting the dominance of rivals Benfica and Porto.

Additionally, he led his team to victory in the Taca da Liga twice and reached the knockout stages of the Champions League, showcasing his aptitude in both domestic and European competitions.

Reports suggest that Liverpool could secure Amorim’s services for a relatively modest fee of £12.8 million.

Nevertheless, Chelsea and Manchester United old boy Nemanja Matic has offered his blessing ahead of Amorim’s possible move to Merseyside.

What did Nemanja Matic say about Ruben Amorim?

Nemanja Matic and Ruben Amorim played 16 games together at Benfica before the Serbian moved to Chelsea in 2013.

The Serbian was interviewed by Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness), where the midfielder was quizzed on variety of topics including the future of his former teammate.

And it seems the three-time Premier League champion has given a ringing endorsement of the 39-year-old manager:

“Ruben Amorim is an excellent person, he was one of the people who helped me the most when I arrived at Benfica because he speaks English very well, I hope he hasn’t forgotten how to speak it now,” smiled Matic.

“I see Ruben Amorim at a great club, I don’t know if it will be Liverpool.

“But if it happens, I’m sure he’ll be a great replacement for Klopp because Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a great coach, he already is at the moment.”

“I’d like to see him in the Premier League, let’s see what happens from now on.”
