'Nerve wracking': Ian Wright shares the reason he was worried about watching Liverpool's PL trophy lift

Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy on Sunday as they put an end to 35 years of waiting.

It had been three-and-a-half decades since the Reds had celebrated a league title win in front of their own fans, and they did so with gusto last weekend.

With Anfield resplendent in sunshine, it was a day to remember for every single Liverpool fan.

Not everyone enjoyed the scenes, though.

Clearly, rival fans and title challengers will not have liked seeing the Reds in party mode.

Arsenal were Liverpool’s closest competition this season, and given pundit Ian Wright‘s affiliation to the Gunners, you could imagine Sunday was not his favourite viewing.

Aside from any disappointment at seeing his team lose out, though, Wright has admitted that he was nervous over the reception Trent Alexander-Arnold would receive from Anfield.

Wright was not the only one worried about what would happen with Alexander-Arnold on Sunday.

After the Scouser was roundly booed on his previous appearance at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp had urged fans to ease up on Alexander-Arnold during the trophy celebrations.

Supporters heeded the call, with a more positive reception afforded to the right-back as he collected his Premier League winner’s medal.

Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, Wright admitted that he was a ball of nerves waiting to hear the reaction towards Alexander-Arnold.

“It was nice because you know what was really quite nerve wracking about that is that you could see him in the line getting ready to be announced to come and you could feel his head was like that,” said the Arsenal legend.

“He was down because he’s thinking, I don’t know what’s coming, I don’t know what’s coming.”

“And then obviously it was cheers.

“But I’m glad they kind of like turned it around and saved it a little bit at the end there.”

Plenty of Liverpool supporters will not agree with Wright’s assertion that Alexander-Arnold was owed a happy send-off.

The 26-year-old has turned his back on Liverpool, choosing to run his contract down and leave for Real Madrid on a free transfer.

That should not be applauded.

Whatever fans feel, though, Alexander-Arnold is clearly happy with the way his time at the club has ended.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, the Liverpool academy graduate thanked supporters for a ‘perfect send-off’ after Monday’s parade.

“Perfect send off.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I love my city,” said Alexander-Arnold.
