Yoane Wissa’s move to Newcastle has been plunged into uncertainty once more after a new update on the future of a Brentford replacement target.

Wissa’s future has been up in the air over the last few weeks, with a move to St James’ Park in the balance ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

His 19 league goals helped Brentford to a 10th-placed finish last season, and Football Insider recently revealed that the Bees were set to price interested clubs out of signing Wissa amid interest from Newcastle, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies saw their initial bid of £25million [Sky Sports] for the 28-year-old rejected last month, but the feeling in each camp has been that a move is still set to happen soon, with Newcastle preparing to return with a second offer for Wissa.

Identifying and signing a replacement for the Congo international is believed to be a factor in any possible move that takes him to Tyneside [BBC], and the Bees’ interest in Bournemouth forward Dango Ouattara indicated progress on that front, but a new setback has now emerged that could jeopardise Wissa’s move to the north-east.

Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam (12 August) has issued an update on the Bees’ incoming business, via X, saying: “Brentford’s proposed deal for Dango Ouattara cannot progress until Bournemouth sign a replacement.”

Bournemouth’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli is thought to be cooling, and they are now reportedly looking at other options, but seemingly are not close to sealing a new signing anytime soon.

Andoni Iraola has already lost a whole host of his key men from last season in this summer’s window, with Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen each leaving the club, and so is understandably reluctant to sanction Ouattara’s exit unless a new player comes in.

The 23-year-old is understood to be keen to make the move to Brentford, and while the clubs have held talks, it does not seem as if a move is imminent, which will have a knock-on effect on the Bees’ own business.

Keith Andrews currently only has Igor Thiago and Wissa as his two striker options, and Brentford look to be in a similar position to Bournemouth, with Ouattara coming in to replace the Newcastle-linked forward.

That means that they will likely resist selling Wissa to the Magpies unless the Cherries man is through the door at the Gtech Community Stadium, and with that not set to happen soon, the Congo international’s move to St James’ Park is now back in doubt with the new season set to start in under a weeks time.

Newcastle have routinely missed out on their summer targets so far, as Hugo Ekitike has joined Liverpool, while they also wanted to sign Wissa’s Bees strike partner Bryan Mbeumo, but were beaten to the transfer by Man United.

Alexander Isak also wants to leave St James’ Park, while Benjamin Sesko is another who looks to have chosen Man United over Newcastle, but their annoyances can be calmed by beating off competition from Al-Nassr to sign Wissa.

A new report from French outlet L’Equipe claims that the Saudi side are ready to meet Brentford’s asking price for the attacker to jump ahead of the Tyneside outfit in the queue for his services.

The BBC’s recent report does state that the 28-year-old “still wants to secure a transfer to Newcastle during the current transfer window,” and so if they match the Saudi side’s potential bid, then a deal will surely be done.

Football Insider revealed on 2 August that Brentford will “reluctantly accept” improved bids for Wissa after turning down Newcastle’s £25m offer, and so Magpies boss Howe must still hold out hope of overseeing a successful end to the club’s summer business and bringing him in despite this new setback.
