Ibrahima Konate has entered the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract, with his current deal set to expire in June 2026.

The France international has made clear he wants a significant pay rise – from approximately £70,000 per week to around £200,000 per week – to commit his future to Anfield.

Liverpool’s hierarchy, keen to avoid a repeat of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit, have engaged in active talks with Konate’s representatives, but no agreement has yet been reached.

Just like Alexander-Arnold before him, Konate finds himself in the enviable position of holding all the cards with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal

Real Madrid’s interest in both players follows an identical pattern.

It has been reported that sporting director Richard Hughes has outlined a proposal that heavily features performance-related incentives, whereas Konate is pushing for a higher guaranteed base salary, reflecting his status as a first-team regular alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Reporting in his Liverpool Confidential, Merseyside journalist Lewis Steele answered a question around whether Konate is running his contract down as things stand:

“Not necessarily but it is fair to say Konate’s future hangs in the balance at the time of writing,” he wrote.

“It was November when Richard Hughes first opened talks with Konate’s representatives and, 10 months on, we are no closer to a resolution.”

“Confidential understands Liverpool remain in talks with Konate’s camp and want to wrap up a deal to ensure a position of strength for the future.”

“But there is nothing more to say than that: it is not signed yet and there has been no definite indication either way on the direction of travel.”

“But it is a worry for Liverpool especially after the long-running sagas over contracts last year.”

The 26-year-old enjoyed his most consistent season in 2024-25, making 30 Premier League appearances and playing a crucial role in Liverpool’s title triumph.

The Frenchman appears to have put his injury worries behind him.

After a difficult start to the season, Konate showed his true level against Arsenal this past weekend.
