Liverpool-owned goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili could follow in the footsteps of current Anfield number one Alisson Becker to win a coveted goalkeeping award.
The Georgian, who signed for Liverpool this summer but will remain on loan at Valencia, has enjoyed a remarkable 2024 at club and national team level.
He was part of the Georgian national team that reached the last 16 of the summer European Championship and was impressive during the tournament, showing his class with a string of fine saves.
Giorgi Mamardashvili’s form for Georgi and Valencia has led to his being nominated for the 2024 Yachine Trophy.
The award, which is named after former Soviet Union goalkeeper Lev Yashin is presented annually by France Football to the best performing goalkeeper?
The winner is selected by former Ballon d’Or winners since its creation in 2019.
The 23-year-old was nominated alongside Diogo Costa, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Gregor Kobel, Andrei Lunin, Mike Maignan, Emiliano Martinez, Unai Simon, Yann Sommer and Ronwen Williams.
Marmadashvili joins Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in the list of Red players to have been nominated for the award.
The Brazilian shot-stopper was the first goalkeeper to win the award, when he did so in 2019, following his heroics for Liverpool during their run to the Champions League final.
Alisson was also nominated two years later, but finished second in the rankings, behind Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois.
Other winners of the award are Gianluigi Donnarumma, who won the European championship with and Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez.
