In a summer when Liverpool spent like the club had never done before, it’s no surprise that new signings dominated the team sheet when the Reds took to the Anfield pitch for the club’s first game of the new Premier League season against Bournemouth.

In fact, it was the most debutants the club had fielded in the opening game of a Premier League campaign for a very very long time.

It’s a risky business blooding in new signings, of course.

Wirtz, Ekitike, Frimpong and Kerkez all made their competitive club bows in what was ultimately another opening day win.

Last season, away at Ipswich on the opening day of a campaign which ultimately ended in glory for the Reds, the team didn’t feature any new signings as Arne Slot took charge of a competitive matchday squad for the first time.

The season before – the final campaign under the legendary Jurgen Klopp – the Reds boasted big money signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in their eleven that took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

It was a season in which the Reds ultimately finished second in the league, but did claim both FA Cup and League Cup success, again proving truth in the old adage that a settled side is a good side.

The opener of the 2020/21 season, the campaign immediately proceeding the club’s maiden Premier League success, started with a thriller at Anfield.

And it was once again a familiar side for the Reds, as none of the major summer signings – Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara or Konstantinos Tsimikas – made their Liverpool bows.

But what about that maiden Premier league winning campaign?
