Newcastle United have been told they are treating Alexander Isak unfairly and should be open to him joining Liverpool this summer.

The Reds saw a £110million offer for Isak flatly rejected by Newcastle at the start of the month and were given little encouragement a second bid would be welcomed.

The landscape, though, has changed considerably this week with Isak releasing an explosive statement referring to broken promises from the Magpies, who in turn declared publicly for the first time there were certain circumstances that would lead them to entertain a sale.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe then admitted on Friday he had held discussions towards the end of last season with Isak over the player's future.

Isak hasn't featured for Newcastle this summer and continues to train away from the first team, and won't be involved for the Premier League visit of the Reds to St James' Park on Monday.

And while former France international William Gallas - who moved from Chelsea to Arsenal in controversial circumstances in 2006 - admits Isak hasn't acted correctly, he believes Newcastle should not be absolved from blame for their part in the tawdry transfer tale.

"I think the way Isak has handled this, it looks like he’s been given bad advice from his circle - simple," said Gallas.

"But at the same time, listen, I won't only blame him because I also think that Newcastle must take some responsibility for what is happening here.

I'm not sure I agree with the approach the club has taken.

"The player has scored loads of goals every season.

Last season, he hit more than 20 goals.

You’re going to double your money for him with Liverpool’s offer.

"He gave everything to Newcastle in those last few years, and sometimes you have to let players leave at that point.

It doesn’t seem fair to make his life so hard when a huge offer comes in.

"He’s trying to force his way out, but that’s not the best way to leave the club."

Speaking to Gambling Zone, Gallas added: "You can’t say that Isak hasn’t given everything for Newcastle since he joined the club.

"Newcastle have to be careful about how they handle it from here, because if Newcastle ask for a ridiculous price, Liverpool could walk away from the table and then you have a situation where the player is in limbo and Newcastle will probably have to accept less money for him in January while also having a weaker squad for the first half of the season.

"Ultimately, Newcastle should let him go."
