AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed Malick Thiaw's move to Newcastle United - as Liverpool continue to monitor developments around Alexander Isak.

It's been a challenging transfer window for the Magpies, with only Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale representing high-profile arrivals so far.

Now, they appear to be closing in on a centre-back addition in the shape of the 24-year-old Germany international, with a striker no doubt the next priority for the North East club.

Liverpool retain an interest in Isak, having seen a £110 million bid rejected by Newcastle in recent weeks.

However, it has been claimed they will only return with an improved offer if and when they receive encouragement from the Magpies, as they do not intend to waste time with a series of rejected bids.

For Newcastle, the acquisition of Thiaw, who is currently undergoing his medical, will be a welcome boost following a series of setbacks in the market.

Although the move has yet to be officially announced by the club, Allegri's recent comments strongly point to the direction of travel.

"It's a shame he's gone, but Igli Tare is working to find a replacement," the Milan boss told Sky in Italy on Sunday following his side's pre-season defeat against Chelsea.

"This is the transfer market and we need to keep working because I have excellent players in the squad who are making themselves available.

"We have [Matteo] Gabbia, [Strahinja] Pavlovic and [Fikayo] Tomori, so we have three defenders to play next Sunday.

If someone arrives this week, great, otherwise we'll wait."
