Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United looks increasingly uncertain, despite manager Eddie Howe insisting on Friday that he would be willing to reintegrate the striker into his squad.
Howe remains desperate to sign a forward before the transfer window closes, with finding a replacement for Callum Wilson having been a priority since the start of the summer.
However, Newcastle’s frustrating pursuit of attacking targets has continued this week.
Speaking on Friday, Howe admitted that no deal is currently “close.”
Newcastle saw a £40m bid for Brentford star Yoane Wissa rejected.
Wissa is believed to be keen on a move to Tyneside this summer.
When asked on Friday morning if there was a possibility that Newcastle might not make any further signings before the September 1 deadline, Howe said: “Yes, of course.
I mean, that’s equally possible.
“I think for us, we are still actively in the market but, I say all the time, that any transfer has to be right.
With PSR, you’re always trying to manage that situation.
“So, if we make a signing that goes against some of the long-term planning, we can put ourselves in a very difficult position again very, very quickly
So, we have to be careful with what we do.
“Yes, we have a need, but we also can’t allow ourselves to go into a difficult moment where we’re forced to sell a player, as we did with Elliot Anderson and Yakuba Minteh, So, we’re always aware of that.
“And we’re sort of at that moment where we have to be careful.”
According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle United are exploring a move for “two or three” strikers this summer — including Atletico Madrid forward Alexander Sørloth as they await clarity on Wissa’s situation.
The Magpies have also shown interest in Jørgen Strand Larsen, though Wolves are determined to keep hold of the Norwegian.
With the September 1 transfer deadline fast approaching, time is running out for Newcastle to get deals over the line.
