St James’ Park promises to be a cauldron of noise and tension when Newcastle United host Liverpool on Monday night, with the Alexander Isak transfer saga ensuring this fixture carries far more needle than usual.
The Swedish striker’s public fallout with Newcastle has dominated headlines all week, with Isak accusing the club of “broken promises” and insisting he can no longer continue at St James’ Park.
His inevitable absence against Liverpool – the very club he’s desperate to join – adds so much more motivation for the home side.
Liverpool’s own injury concerns will play a role on Monday with both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong ruled out through hamstring problems.
Arne Slot’s side are without their preferred right-back options, likely forcing either Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, or Joe Gomez into that role against Newcastle’s left flank threat.
But for the Magpies there is positive fitness news.
Eddie Howe has received a significant squad boost ahead of the crucial clash.
Joe Willock is back in contention after training this week following his calf injury sustained during pre-season in South Korea.
“Joe trained on Tuesday and Wednesday and trained really well,” Howe confirmed in Friday’s press conference.
“When he went down in the game [in Korea] I thought he was going to be out longer term, it didn’t look good
Credit to him, he’s got back fit and looking good.”
The Newcastle manager also revealed that new signing Jacob Ramsey is available for his potential debut after completing his £40 million move from Aston Villa.
“He’ll be available,” Howe stated.
“We’ve still got training sessions to go before the game, but he’s in a good place and has looked really impressive.”
“Really, really good technically, very intelligent, and I think he’ll add a lot to the team.”
Meanwhile, Howe also revealed in his press conference that he had talks with Alexander Isak about a transfer before the season ended.
